LA CALA

La Cala de Mijas, or Mijas Costa as it is otherwise known, is the coastal area for the municipality of Mijas. This municipality is one of the largest in Andalucia covering 148 sq km and now incorporating Riviera del Sol and Calahonda.

Mijas Costa has 12 km of clean, well kept beaches split into four areas el Chaparral, la Cala, el Bombo and Calahonda. Mijas Costa village still maintains the charm of days gone by and has been relatively unspoilt by the mass tourism around the coast.

The beach area offers the usual array of sports; windsurfing, jet-skiing and pedal boats to name but a few and the beaches have their usual mix of bars and Chiringuito restaurants.

Within the municipality in general there are many Hotels and Commercial Centres with a wonderful mix of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes. With a thriving mix of ex-pats, not only British but Germans and Scandinavians too there is a real cosmopolitan feel to this area.

Mijas is also known for its many first class golf courses throughout the Mijas Valley.

Another good family day out is at the Club Hipico Equitacion at La Cala, which is an English owned stables operating to a very high standard. Not only do they offer lessons, both for beginners and intermediates, but also great trekking and hill rides.

Still on the horsey theme, one of the biggest days out to be found here now is the Hipodromo Costa del Sol or Race Course. They offer free parking and racing all year round, with many evening meets in the summer months. They also offer a varied mix of entertainment throughout the year.

Mijas Costa has a few market days, on Wednesday and Friday there is a market at the urbanisation of Calypso from 9.00am – 2.00pm and on Saturday there is a boot fair at Las Lagunas again from 9.00am – 2.00pm.
