La Canada Golf Club
La Canada Golf Club was the first municipal golf course on the Costa del Sol and is situated close to Almenara and Valderrama Golf Club in the Guadiaro area. For many years La Canada Golf Course was just a nine-hole course designed and built by Robert Trent Jones in 1982.
The further nine holes were designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 2001 with lovely views across the Mediterranean Sea and Valderrama. The course is not particularly hilly and so is good for the walkers.
The neighbouring town of Guadiaro is said to house the highest number of amateur golfers in Spain and the course has very well maintained greens and a large variety of autochthonous trees which is important to the area.
I have played this course a number of times and enjoy it very much. It would appear that whereas many golf courses on the Costa del Sol are built on marshy, soft land, La Canada Golf Club seems to have more rock underfoot making the fairways and greens very fast. I found myself "chipping and running" onto the greens rather than trying to hold the green from a distance.
This is definitely one of my favourites with some challenging holes but all in all I normally play close to or better than my handicap here…nice.
